Saying Yes

This one I did under one hour for a poetry-reading session at U.P. I don’t know why I had to be there in the first place, but the night was over and the sentiment’s no less real. First posted noong Apr 13, 2004 sa bulilyaso.blogdrive.com.

Nobody said it was going to be easy
But it came to me as naturally as breathing
Waking, opening my eyes to
This blinding, searing light of life-altering revelations
Like how I haven’t written a poem in years.

Come to me when I’m a better person
When saying yes becomes as natural as breathing,
Waking, opening my eyes to
My own nakedness; naked, naked, naked
And no fear.
And not a single poem in years.

When the rest of my life is hinged upon a word
When the thought of you summons a certainty
So arresting, it’s surreal
When the strength of your grace wraps me in
The wonders of your hands
When I am a tiny, pulsing light that exists
Only in your mind
When you can make me believe I’m not as human as I am
When I know I should love you with a love that is
Beyond me
I surrender, and wish I may write a poem
So beautiful I can cry.
