Writing Challenge: Day 17

(First posted here.)

“Take for instance the seemingly inconsequential decision Keta makes outside the mock interview doors,” sabi ko kay Keebs.

“I hate adverbs. They load words unnecessarily.”

“And you would’ve made a stronger point by not using one,” sabi ko, quick to catch the slip.

“Still. Continue.”

I was demonstrating my powers to Keebs since this morning and so far have not been able to get my point across.

This power to see the ramifications of people’s choices did not have a set time span. And so everything I’ve meddled in so far had not impactful visual effect that Keebs could actualy applaud at.

For a budding mentalist I have not been able to show anything remotely resembling foresight. All I can tell him are people’s stories, and Keebs already knew what a grand liar I was before all of this took over my life.

“Keta is one year younger than us and yet she has absolutely none of the insecurity or arrogance people out of place frequently had for peers.”

“True.  I can call her more well-adjusted than your average dude.”

“And she is. Which is why, in the grand scheme of things, she is the best fit for the toxic, insane lifestyle of an FMCG logistics manager.”

“At twenty-one?”

“At twenty.”

“Okay…”

“So, she walks past the company’s booth and the mock interviewer notices her. The mock interviewer is not sure why.  He smiles at her through the door.  She notices this.  At this point, her path diverges.  Will she walk in and take that interview which will change her life  forever?  Or will she continue walking,  discounting the smile as the random greeting of a kindly stranger?”

Keebs stopped walking.  “What exactly did you do?”

“She did walk away, Keebs. But you know me. I had to step in.”

“But that was her choice!”

“Did I really take that choice away from her? Or did I just make her choice a more informed one?”

“You don’t know what you’re doing, do you, Dante?”

“I do. In the battle between sentient beings who know every little detail of our lives enough to predict our futures and the frail, crazy lot of perpetually neurotic human beings, I vote humanity. Take a stand, esse.”
